CREATIVE PROCESS
Milaaya Art celebrates and preserves traditional thread-based art by empowering artisans and artists, promoting inclusivity, and ensuring the craft thrives in the modern world. A Mumbai-based initiative dedicated to creating unique works of thread-based art in collaboration with leading artists and artisans.
We house skilled artisans from various parts of India in our ateliers, fostering an inclusive and secular work environment. Although hand embroidery has traditionally been a male-dominated practice, Milaaya Art is committed to uplifting and empowering artisans of all backgrounds.
A percentage of all proceeds from Milaaya Art goes towards the Milaaya Art Foundation, reinforcing our commitment to uplifting communities and ensuring the longevity of these crafts.
WE COLLABORATE WITH LEADING ARTISTS AND ARTISANS TO CREATE CONTEMPORARY ART PIECES.
Our artisans work alongside artists and designers, bringing intricate artworks to life using various threads such as cotton, silk, and bullion and our approach to art is deeply rooted in sustainability and innovation.
Highly skilled artisans, or karigars, are the backbone of our work. At every exhibition, we credit and archive each artisan’s contribution, ensuring their roles are recognized and celebrated. This practice helps us maintain a virtuous cycle of shared success and social impact.
Many of our artisans have honed their craft over generations, carefully translating every brushstroke into intricate stitches. This ensures that each piece stays true to the artist’s original vision. The resulting process is meticulous and can take between 7 to 10 months to complete each piece, with each artwork being a true testament to dedication, rigour and artistry.
Every artwork produced at Milaaya Art is a testament to the marriage of tradition and innovation. This combination of ancestral craftsmanship with contemporary art has revolutionized the field in recent years and offers limitless possibilities for both artists and artisans working today.
